Whitman College is one of the University's newest residential complexes, yet it was painstakingly built in the Collegiate Gothic style and methods of the late 19th century. The fieldstone buildings were constructed with load-bearing masonry, and Indiana limestone was used for many architectural and sculptural features, as well as some exterior walls. The complex, designed by architect and 1980 graduate alumnus Demetri Porphyrios, includes two courtyards, a great tower, and a series of arches forming an arcade. Whitman College is part of Princeton's residential college system, which places students in one of six tight-knit and supportive communities upon their arrival at the University. The 250,000-square-foot college consists of eight buildings that function as residential, social, and academic spaces for more than 500 students. The other residential colleges, which showcase a range of architectural styles, are Butler, Forbes, Mathey, New College West, Rockefeller and Yeh.
