Designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei, Spelman Halls is a series of eight dormitories with apartment-style suites. Built in the Modernist style, the triangular buildings and diagonal spaces feature ribbon windows, flat precast concrete walls, and metal tubing. The dormitories were named for Laura Spelman Rockefeller, who, with her husband, John D. Rockefeller Sr., helped form Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, the first American college for black women. The Pablo Picasso sculpture Head of a Woman looks over the lawn south of the complex.
