At This Location:

Completed in 1894, Alexander Hall is home to Richardson Auditorium, a premier convocation and performance venue on campus. Alexander Hall was designed by architect William Appleton Potter, who also designed the University's Chancellor Green and East Pyne Hall, and collaborated on Witherspoon Hall. The first public lecture in the building was given in November 1894 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mystery novels. The 891-seat concert hall is renowned for its acoustical quality, and the structure is admired for its architectural detail. The Romanesque building features an exterior of granite and brown sandstone, and a wealth of academically themed stained glass, mosaics, sculptures, and carvings, both inside and out.
