This class will use historical analysis to understand how different kinds of economic policies have succeeded or failed in ameliorating insecurity and inequality in the United States. Looking back to the 1930s, we will explore the template that FDR's New Deal program offers policymakers in 2023. We will evaluate to what extent the New Deal, as one the most transformative moments of American public policy. provides a roadmap as well as cautionary signs for how to address the overlapping crises of today - inequality, inflation, global warming, pandemics, and more.
