Is democracy at risk in the United States? Scholars of new democracies have long worried about democratic backsliding. What is democratic backsliding? What is the role of partisan polarization, misinformation, institutional checks & balances, conspiracy theories, populism, economic inequality, and xenophobia and other prejudices?
