Board approves 14 new faculty appointments

The Princeton University Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of 14 faculty members, including one full professor and 13 assistant professors.

Professor

A. Carla Staver, in ecology and evolutionary biology, specializes in plant and ecosystem ecology and paleoecology. Her appointment is effective July 1.

Staver comes to Princeton from Yale University, where she has taught since 2014, most recently as a professor. She served as associate director of the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies from 2021 to 2024 in addition to roles on various steering, advisory, search, and planning committees. She was also the interim director of graduate studies in 2024.

Her research on plant ecology in savanna ecosystems focuses on developing theoretical models to study the patterns and effects of wildfires in grassland biomes, as well as their influence on carbon emissions. Staver has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation, including as a co-principal investigator with frequent collaborator Simon Levin, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton.

She is a recipient of the George Mercer Award from the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and the Jasper Loftus-Hills Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Naturalists. She was also named an ESA Early Career Fellow from 2015 to 2020.

Staver is a member of the Ecological Society of America, the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation and the American Geophysical Union. She previously served as associate editor of the Journal of Ecology from 2018 to 2022 and on the advisory board of the Global PaleoFire Working Group. She is also on the steering committee of the Socio-Ecological Observatory for Studying African Woodlands.

She has authored more than 80 papers in journals including Nature, Ecology Letters, Science, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and has presented at numerous conferences and seminars.

She has testified as an expert at hearings for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources and has created exhibits on grass and fire for the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.
