Info tab content
This course covers a variety of fundamental topics in the study of physical ocean scalar fields, including material tracers, thermodynamic tracers, buoyancy, and watermasses. We study the physics and mathematics that support a rigorous and quantitative analysis of ocean scalars for the purpose of understanding ocean processes. The course consists of chalkboard lectures and discussions. Students should have a strong foundation in fluid mechanics and mathematical physics such as taught in AOS 571 +572 (geophysical fluid mechanics) or comparable courses in engineering, physics, or applied math.
