This course addresses the ethics of development policies and practices. Topics addressed include: 1. What is ethics? Is ethics about the choices you make, the consequences of your actions, or the virtues you exhibit? 2. Global redistribution. How much do rich countries, and the people in them, owe to poor countries and poor people? 3. Effective altruism. 4. Human rights. How do large development organizations deal with human rights concerns? 5. GDP per capita v. the capabilities approach. 6. How should we talk about poverty, and what are the problems with how poor people, poor countries, and development are represented?
