This course covers Arabic literature of the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, the post-Abbasid era that is sometimes referred to as 'postclassical." We read specimens of poetry, prose, maqamat, and travelogues with eye to their relationship with the so-called "classical" works and genres. Students become familiar with the main poets and writers of this period and the new kinds of genres that develop. Students are welcome to suggest further readings from the period. The course is taught in Arabic. The equivalent of a minimum of four years of Arabic instruction is required.
