Princeton Summer Theater opens its 2025 season

Alex Conboy

Alex Conboy of the Class of 2025 is the season’s artistic director.

In a season that opens June 12, Princeton Summer Theater is producing a trio of mainstage shows — a musical adaptation of “The Bridges of Madison County,” a whodunit called “The Game's Afoot” and “Frankenstein." The 2025 season will also debut a new cabaret event and continues PST’s popular children’s programming with a kid-friendly adaptation of the Greek epic “The Odyssey.”

The independent troupe’s 55th main-stage season runs through Aug. 2 in Hamilton Murray Theater on the Princeton University campus. Students and recent graduates from Princeton and elsewhere put on the shows. This year’s summer stock productions consider “the value of sincerity” across dramatic genres, said Alex Conboy, a member of Princeton’s Class of 2025 who is the season’s artistic director.

Conboy was a religion major and humanistic studies minor, who performed in productions at the Lewis Center for the Arts including “Macbeth in Stride,” directed by Layla Williams ’25, who served as artistic director of PST last summer.

“The Bridges of Madison County”: June 12-28

The musical adaptation of Robert James Waller’s novel, “The Bridges of Madison County,” with book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, is “a wife and mother's love story that explores what could have been and what may still be possible in her life and in her heart,” said Conboy. “What will Francesca decide?” The production is directed by Eliyana Abraham ’23, who served as PST artistic director in 2023. Halle Mitchell ’23 is the musical director.

Children’s programming: June 18-July 30

This year’s children’s show is a kid-friendly version of “The Odyssey,” adapted by Lucy Shea ’27, who also serves as a co-student leader of Trenton Youth Singers, part of Trenton Arts at Princeton. Performances of “The Odyssey” take place June 18-25, and July 6-30. Shows begin at 11 a.m., and doors open at 10:30 a.m.

PST’s popular youth theater workshops will be offered for ages 5-15 on July 7-9 and July 28-30, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

“The Game’s Afoot”: July 3-19

Ken Ludwig’s award-winning whodunit “The Game’s Afoot; or Holmes for the Holidays,” takes audiences on a “Christmas in July” escapade “that turns friends into foes and keeps viewers on their toes up until the very end,” Conboy said. Wasif Sami ’25 will direct.

New cabaret, “Voice Lesson”: Late July

The season will include a PST first: a cabaret, “Voice Lesson,” directed and written by Allison Spann ’20, incorporating songs from musicals and the Great American Songbook sung by PST alumni and members of the current company. Watch the website for details on the late-July dates.

“Frankenstein”: July 24-Aug. 2

The final mainstage show of the season is the critically acclaimed adaptation of Mary Shelley's “Frankenstein” by Nick Dear. It explores "the nature of love and hate, divinity and wretchedness in a fantastical dramatic fashion,” said Conboy, who will direct.
