This seminar will explore how US, European, and international human rights law deal with current controversies surrounding religious expression. Topics include religious 'hate speech" and blasphemy; proselytism and anti-conversion laws; religious attire in public settings; religious expression in politics; government-sponsored prayer and religious displays; religious expression in prisons and the military; conflicts between religious expression and anti-discrimination laws; church autonomy questions; and religious expression in schools.
