Seminar highlights the major approaches to and debates about Africa's rich and complicated history with a focus on the impact of the Atlantic slave trade. Topics include the nature of African societies before the era of the Atlantic slave trade; the shifting of Africa's
political and economic center of gravity from the interior to the coastal regions; and the demographic, social, and political impact of the slave trade on the Atlantic world including the underdevelopment of Africa and slave resistance in the Americas.
