Seminar covers the history, historiography and theory of Latin America's early modernity. Through works in economic, social, political, and cultural history, we consider why some types of historical questions have seemed more urgent than others at different times and what are the origins and meanings of historiographical shifts over the evolution of the field. Both classic texts and recent works are studied, often in counterpoint. Learning pedagogy is an important element of the course. Course ideally suited for students of early modernity, empires, the Americas, global history.
