State capture refers to the control of state institutions by firms and government officials so as to influence economic policies and regulation in their favor. It has become one of the main drivers of corruption and misgovernance in developing countries, with major implications for state capacity and economic development. The goal of this course is to document and analyze state capture, discuss institutional reforms that would prevent it, and limit its corrosive impact on state capacity and democratic norms.
