- KOR 1001: Introductory Korean IIntroductory Korean (KOR 1001) is designed for true beginners. Conducted at half the pace of instruction compared to a Elementary Korean (KOR 101) the goal is to help students master the Korean alphabet and develop oral and aural proficiency. Upon successful completion of both KOR 1001 and KOR 1002, students will have acquired fundamental reading and writing skills in Korean, along with the ability to engage in basic conversations in the language. After completing KOR 1001 and KOR 1002, students will be well-prepared for the second half of the regular elementary Korean course (KOR 102) in the spring term.
- KOR 102: Elementary Korean IIA continuation of KOR 101. Continued development of proficiency in basic communication by balancing four language skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- KOR 107: Intermediate Korean IIA continuation of KOR 105. Continued development of four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in Korean. Complex grammatical structures are taught while the basics are reviewed. Journals are kept for writing practice.
- KOR 108: Intensive Korean IIA continuation of Korean 103. This course covers Intermediate Korean material, focusing on complex grammatical structures, reading, and writing. Journals are kept for writing practice. Students who have successfully completed KOR 103 and 108 are placed in KOR 301 for further practice of conversation. Those with strong conversational skills may also test into KOR 303, Integrative Korean, which focuses more on literacy.
- KOR 302: Advanced Korean IIThis course aims to further develop proficiency in the language skills while fostering intercultural competence and critical thinking. Through interactive class discussions, diverse readings, oral presentations, and writing exercises, students will broaden their vocabulary, master formal communication, and refine stylistic variety. The course features texts in various genres, covering topics such as Korean society, history, and literature, allowing students to deepen their understanding of Korea and advance language skills.
- KOR 308: Integrative Korean IIKOR 308 further enhances literacy through authentic readings, in-depth class discussions, presentations, and writing. It explores topics like ethnic Koreans abroad and South Korea's global interactions, with emphasis on social differences. Students develop intercultural competence through academic study and community engagement, analyzing the intersections of language, culture, and social institutions to deepen their understanding of cultural diversity. The course also expands advanced Sino-Korean vocabulary, preparing students to engage with diverse authentic texts.
- KOR 402: Contemporary Korean Language and Culture IIReading and discussion of thoughts and issues within contemporary Korean society. Readings are drawn from a variety of sociocultural and historical as well as sociolinguistic topics including family, marriage, gender issues, education, technology, and the changes in the languages of both South and North Korea. Class discussions are conducted in Korean.
- KOR 407/EAS 406: Readings in Modern Korean IIThis course is designed (1) to advance students' literacy skills to the Superior level; (2) to promote a deeper understanding of the Korean language, literature and history; (3) to further develop their critical thinking through reading and writing in Korean; and (4) to encourage intercultural interaction through outreach projects. Focusing on change in the Korean language in relation to history, society, and culture, the course covers a wide range of sociocultural and political as well as sociolinguistic issues presented in classic short stories, poems, and historical texts.
